WILSON - William Carr Smith, 83, died unexpectedly at his home, Tuesday, March 1, 2011. He is survived by his four children, daughters, Mary Eliza Duckett and husband, Chip, of High Point and Susan Johnson and her husband, Graham, of Raleigh; sons, William Smith and wife, Landon, of Raleigh and John T. Smith and wife, Stephanie, of Wilson; grandchildren, Will, Charles and Sam Duckett; Gray, Tyler and Charlie Johnson; William and Lucy Smith; John T., Carr and Louise Smith; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Pace Barnes and her long-time companion, Thomas Harris, of Miami Beach, FL; and sister-in-law, Betty Jon Smith of Wilson. Will Carr was a native of Wilson and was the son of the late Eliza Eborn Carr Smith and Richard Thorp Smith. He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Mary Louise Barnes Smith. He is also predeceased by his brother, Richard Thorp Smith, Jr., and his sister, Sara Smith Tomlinson, his brother-in-law, Robert Lee Tomlinson, Jr. and his nephew, Robert Lee Tomlinson, III. He was graduated from Charles L. Coon High School and attended the Citadel. He served in the U.S. Navy. In 1949, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of the Epsilon Chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was a respected businessman who began his career in his family's tobacco warehouse and farming business. He later started Smith and Smith Insurance Services and Real Estate with his brother, Richard. He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and an Elder. Will Carr enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren in Morehead City. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and instilled in his family a love for the outdoors. He was an avid golfer all of his life, and was a true southern gentleman. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends at home, Thursday, 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday at 11:00 AM.
