WILSON - Wiley Leon Lane, Jr., 90, died Sunday, January 3, 2010.

Funeral, Wednesday, 2 PM, First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor.

He was born December 1919, in Edgecombe County to Wiley Leon and Delmar Moore Lane. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a daughter, Susan Davis Lane, and a sister, Ione Lane Preseren.

Upon graduation from high school he entered Wake Forest College at the age of 16 where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1940 and Juris Doctor in 1942. While in law school he served as president of his graduating law class and was a member of Panhellenic Council and the Gamma Eta Gamma Legal Fraternity.

After law school he worked for the federal government for five years. He began practicing law in Wilson in 1947 and practiced until retirement in 2003, retiring under the firm name of Lane & Boyette. He served as Recorders Court judge for 10 years. A member of the N.C. Bar, he was admitted to practice in Federal District Court for Eastern North Carolina. He found the practice of law to be interesting and challenging. What he enjoyed and treasured most through his practice of 55 years were the many lifelong friends he made.

Throughout his life he was actively involved in many community affairs. He served a chair of the Young Democrats, president of the Wilson Jaycees, chair of the Wilson County Boy Scouts, a member of the Eastern North Carolina Scout Council and was a former member of the Elks and Wilson Country Club for over 60 years. In First Presbyterian he taught Sunday School for several years and was a chairman of the Board of Deacons.

Wiley enjoyed traveling, loved to fish and hunt, but his weekend rounds of golf were enjoyed the most. Summers at Topsail Beach with his family created some of his most cherished memories.

Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Susan Davis Lane; daughters, Kennon Boyette and husband, Will, of Wilson, Elizabeth Scott Lane of Raleigh; son, Davis Wiley Lane and wife, Jennifer, of Wilson; grandchildren, Davis Wiley Lane, Jr. and Elizabeth Kennon Lane; brother, Julian Graham Lane of Wilson; brother-in-law, Herman John Preseren of Winston-Salem.
