WILSON - Vernon J. Morton, 81, died Thursday, September 4, 2008. Mr. Morton was the former city editor for the Wilson Daily Times, management consultant at East Carolina University and a retired special assistant to Governor James G. Martin as speechwriter for the governor and first lady. The funeral will be for and at the convenience of the family. Surviving: wife, Annie Louise Barnes Morton; daughter, Gail Wheeler of Wilson; sons, Keith Morton and V.J. "Butch" Morton Jr. of Wilson; grandchildren, Camren and Spencer Morton. Memorials are suggested to WilMed Hospice, 1705 Tarboro St, SW, Wilson NC 27893. The family would like to thank WilMed Hospice, Doctors Bynum, Lerro, Metz, Workman and their staffs and the Palliative Care unit at Wilson Medical Center.
