Susan Davis Lane passed away peacefully in her sleep after declining health. Her warmth, kindness, humor and beautiful smile never wavered once in 93 years.
A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 17 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Wilson. The family will receive friends at the home on Sunday, October 16 from 4 - 6 PM.
Susan was born in Goldsboro on November 13,1928 to Cora Smith Davis and James Watson Davis. She spent most of her childhood in Wilson and later in Kinston, graduating from Grainger High School. From high school she earned a business degree from St. Mary's College, the class of 1949. Susan continued to live in Raleigh working as an executive administrator to the Dean of Engineering at North Carolina State University.
It was while Susan attended a dance that she was introduced to a young attorney from Wilson, Wiley L. Lane. That night was the spark that led to a wonderful marriage of 57 years. With Wiley, Susan lived her remaining life raising three children, enjoying two grandchildren and embracing the Wilson Community.
Susan was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, actively participating in church circles and the altar guild. She was past president and member of the Bar Auxiliary, as well as, past president and member of the Wilson Woman's Club. Other community interests were the Wilson Arts Council and Wilson Historic Preservation. Susan enjoyed hosting her Bridge Club, the members of The Round Table Book Club and parties for her friends. She loved the art of decorating, and each holiday was illustrated by her fun and beautiful touches. Christmas was especially a special time for the family. Later in life she took up painting. Her artwork can be seen throughout her home and her beach house where she spent her summers with her family. A wonderful cook, Susan was known locally for her chocolate candy, caramel and chocolate cakes. Her travels and trips with Wiley and the children brought many adventures and cherished memories throughout the years.
But her greatest joy in life came from the love and time she shared with her husband, children and grandchildren who affectionately called her "Mimi".
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley L. Lane, Jr. and a daughter Susan Davis Lane.
She is survived by her daughters, Kennon Lane Boyette (Will) of Wilson and Elizabeth Scott Lane of Raleigh, and son, Davis Wiley Lane of Wilson; two grandchildren, Davis Wiley Lane, Jr. and Elizabeth Kennon Lane of Wilson.
The family would like to extend a special thank you for the care and love over the many years to Daisy Edmundson and her son Carl Edmundson and more recent by Bernice Hodge, Barbara Flora and Mary Burch and the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 3184, Wilson, NC 27895.
