William Sidney Harmon, 83, of Wilson, passed away surrounded by family on Friday April 28, 2023.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 3, 1:00-2:00 pm at Wilson Memorial Service, followed at 2:00 by a graveside service at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Sidney was born in Newport News, VA and grew up in Bertie County NC. He graduated from his beloved University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for both his undergraduate and postgraduate degree from the UNC School of Pharmacy in 1961.
He married his high school sweetheart, Anna Darden Gatling in 1960 and after graduation, they moved to Washington DC where he worked for McReynolds Pharmacy just steps from the White House. Once his first daughter was born, he decided the big city life wasn’t for him and purchased Harmon’s Pharmacy in Hertford NC, where he and the family thrived. In 1970, he bought Terminal Drug Store in Wilson where he and his growing family settled to build a wonderful life.
Sid operated Terminal Drug Store in downtown Wilson for 40 years and served the Wilson community in many ways. He took care of his employees and customers, many of whom looked to him for advice and counsel. He was known for his quiet generosity and steadfast dedication to those in need. He was a long-standing member of First Baptist Church of Wilson, a member of the Sertoma Club and The Elks Club, where eating lunch with his buddies at the “big round table” was a favorite past time.
If you know Sid, then you know he loved the UNC Tarheels. He spent years taking his family to football and basketball games and there wasn’t much in his wardrobe that wasn’t Carolina blue. And just so you know, he did eventually forgive his first born for choosing to attend NC State.
While the pharmacy was his livelihood, his life was filled with love for family and friends. He loved to travel with Anna, and after a favorite trip to France to visit family, he returned wanting wine and cheese with every meal. He also loved to spend time fishing with friends, piloting his Cessna and playing golf. In recent years, he had become an avid bird watcher. His forever project was creating a beach haven for his family to retreat to and where many precious family memories were made. He never missed a dance recital, music performance or baseball game for his children. Sid also adored and was so proud of his grandchildren. He was especially looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild. Sid was the heart of the family, and he will be missed beyond measure.
Preceding him in death were his infant daughter, Anna Courtney Harmon; his father, William Raymond Harmon; his mother, Rosalie Early Harmon Marsh and his brother, Ramon Harmon.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Anna Gatling Harmon; daughter, Tami Wiggs & David; grandchildren, Thorne Wiggs & Lydia and LeeAnna Wiggs McLawhorn & Michael; daughter, Tasha Weatherington & Kenny; grandson, Richard Lee Weatherington & fiancé, Elizabeth James; son, Brian Harmon & Diane; step grandchildren, Amber Whitley, Tyler Whitley & Leeann; step great grandchildren, Allyson Winstead, Meredyth Winstead & Hunter Whitley; brother, Robert Malcom Harmon & Brenda; nephew, Tommy Harmon; nephews, Chris Harmon, Michael Harmon & Karen and Greg Harmon; sister-in-law, Elizabeth O’Shella Gatling & Roy Pattishall; nephews, Christopher Pattishall and fiancé, Eva Lerner, Jonathan Pattishall and Nicholas Pattishall.
