GOLDSBORO - Reverend Garvin C. Martin, 79, went home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2009. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Lee Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Compton Martin; his daughters: Wendellyn Lee Romine (Steve) of Virginia Beach, VA, Hope Martin Chenault (Keith) of Hockessin DE; his sons: Dr. Sidney N. Martin (Pam), of Fenton, MI and Dr. Lewis P. Martin (Susan) of Wilson; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren; his step-daughter Kathleen Compton Westbrook (Richard) of Knoxville,TN, his step-sons: John Compton III (Marsha) of Goldsboro, NC and Paul Compton (Ann) of Goldsboro, NC and five step-grandchildren.
Garvin's service defined the term pastor, serving as a foreign missionary with his family for a decade in the Philippine islands and again as the shepherd of several churches in Virginia and North Carolina. His presence on earth will be dearly missed but he would want us all to move forward by seeking daily the Lord's will in our lives and working to complete his kingdom.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 14 at 2:00 pm at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, 300 S. Madison Ave., Goldsboro. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm at the church.
The family will also receive visitors Sunday, November 15, 2-4 pm at Bliley Funeral Home, 6900 Hull Street Rd, Richmond, VA. A memorial service will be held at Bethany Place Baptist Church, 1501 S. Providence Rd, Richmond at 3:00 pm. on Monday, November 16.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention, PO Box 6767, Richmond VA 23230 or to Madison Ave Baptist Church, 1703 E. Laurel St, Goldsboro NC 27530.
