STANTONSBURG – Ralph T. Wainwright, 85, died Saturday, February 24, 2018.
Funeral, Monday, 7:00 PM, First Baptist Church, Stantonsburg, followed by visitation. Interment, Tuesday, 4:00 PM, Stantonsburg Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David Thurston and Avis Smith Wainright and brother, Sam Wainright. He attended NC State University and graduated from Atlantic Christian College and East Carolina University with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. He began his teaching career at Stantonsburg High School in 1959 and later taught at Fremont and Lee Woodard Schools. During his career he enjoyed teaching math, vocational education, driver’s education and coaching basketball. He loved working with students. He worked in school administration with Wilson County Schools during the latter part of his career. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Wainwright was a life-long member of First Baptist Church Stantonsburg where he taught Adult Sunday School for more than 30 years. His hobbies included spending time with his family, reading and watching sports events, especially those of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Wade Wainwright; daughters, Connie Blythe (Charles), Christy Whitley (John) and Joan Taylor (Jeffrey) all of Stantonsburg; grandchildren, Mark and Joel Whitley and Ellison and Will Taylor.
