Child of God, Wife, Mother, Grammie, Sister, Friend, Artist, Servant -- a feisty lady from Jackson Heights, NY who found her love, A.J., and made her home in Wilson. The phrase "Lovely clothes, handsome beaus, she is cute from head to toes" was used in high school to describe Peggy, who graduated from Newtown High in NY and moved to Wilson to attend Atlantic Christian College. She graduated from college in 1959 with an Art Education degree and while at Atlantic Christian, served as editor-in-chief of the 1958 Pine Knot yearbook, was a member of Phi Sigma Tau Sorority, was on the Pine Knot Queen Court and also received the Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities distinction before graduating. Employed as an art teacher in Wilson from 1959-1970, Peggy retired from teaching to raise her children.
Peggy grew up Episcopalian, but joined First Christian Church in 1960, where she served as a Deacon, as well as a Sunday School teacher and on various committees, including multiple stints as a Chair of the Education Committee. She was instrumental in helping to establish the Archives Room at the church, was a long-time member of the Disciples Class and faithfully made sure that the church bulletin boards featured an artistic flair for each season! Making a positive impact in her community, Peggy was a Past President of the Junior Woman's Club and thoroughly enjoyed her time working with the Alumni Association at Atlantic Christian/Barton College, serving as Alumni Council president in 1980.
She leaves behind many family members to cherish her memory -- her husband and soul mate A.J. Walston, daughter, Kathy Hudson (Jody) of Wilson, daughter, Leigh Brady (Chris) and son, Jonathan (Mary Kathryn), both of Raleigh, and grandchildren, Leslie Hudson, Julian Brady, Emmi Brady, Denning Hudson, Stewart Brady and Blake Walston. Peggy is also survived by sisters Gladys Kuntzman (Richard) of Drexel Hill, PA and Pat "Midge" Williams (Charlie) of Greenville, SC, brother-in-law Don Walston (Milena) of Raleigh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her memory will live on in her many works of art that will be treasured by her family for years to come.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Christian Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 2702, Wilson, NC 27894-2702.
