Peggy Neal Hardee Measell, 94, of Wilson, died Saturday, September 23, 2023.
Peg, as she was called by her friends or Mama Peg/Aunt Peg by her extended family, died in her sleep at Kitty Askins Hospice Care in Goldsboro.
The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 28 at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church, followed by visitation.
She is survived by her daughter Karen (Bruce) of the home; sons Sam (Laura) and Keith (Anne). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Lt. Cdr. Genevieve Pike Flatgard (Mark), Ian Pike (Dani), Mark Measell (Bekah), Scott Measell, Joe Measell, Katie Measell and Kyle Measell. She also lived long enough to meet her two great-grandchildren: Elliott Flatgard and Maddie Measell. Also by her many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Allan and Aline Ivey Hardee, her husband Sam Measell, her youngest son Kyle Hardee Measell, daughter-in-law Katy Wilson Measell, her brother John Hardee and sister Betty Hall.
She was born in Columbus, NC and graduated from Lumberton High School. She attended Flora McDonald College before moving to Norfolk, Virginia with her family where she met the love of her life, Sam. She worked as a secretary at the Norfolk Naval Yard, Bethesda Naval Hospital and retired from the Virginia Hospital Association in Richmond, Virginia as she and the children moved to support Sam’s career.
Peg loved sports. She played basketball in High School and was always available to play baseball with the boys. She was a true fan for all of the games that her children and grandchildren played in, even traveling from North Carolina to Virginia to be there for them. She was a lifelong fan of the Carolina Basketball team and the Redskins/Commanders football team. She also loved playing Bridge. She and Sam played in multiple clubs and were life masters. After moving to Wilson, she learned to play Hand and Foot and regularly played with Bruce’s parents and her family.
Peg was a long-time member of River Road Church, Baptist where she sang in the choir. Although she never served as a Deacon, she was a strong support to Sam in his service at River Road. She joined First Baptist Church in Wilson when she moved there.
