Wilson - Onnie Walston Whitley of 1100 Knollwood Drive, died in her home on Thursday, April 17, 2008. Mrs. Whitley was born on January 25, 1926 in Greene County, the daughter of Melford Douglas Walston and Minnie Elizabeth Dildy. Mrs. Whitley was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Wallace Lee Whitley, her brother, Mr. William D. Walston, and her sister, Mrs. Celia Walston Smith. She is survived by her loving daughter, Lee Whitley Black (Jim) and her grandsons Will and Harrison, all of Raleigh, her sister, Ollie Walston Thigpen of Beulaville, NC, and sisters-in-law Mary Whitley Barnes, Sarah Pridgen Whitley, and Ruby Whitley Parker of Wilson, and Dot Walston of Beaufort, NC and brothers-in-law, Douglas B. Whitley of Wilson and Joseph H. Smith of Fayetteville. Mrs. Whitley graduated from Walstonburg High School in 1943 and immediately entered Carolina General Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She retired from the North Carolina Special Care Center as the Assistant Director of Nursing in 1992. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Wilson where she has served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Sunday School Class President, and as a volunteer in the After School Program. A service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 311 West Nash Street, Wilson, with Dr. Doug Murray officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Friday at 1100 Knollwood Drive, 7-8:30 PM.
