WILSON - Maxine Warren Cox, daughter of Edith Hall Warren and Lloyd Warren, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014 after 10 years of declining heath related to Alzheimer's. She was also the foster daughter of Everett and Beulah Hatcher Bemont. All of which preceded her in death.
Funeral, Friday, 11:00 AM, First United Methodist Church. Interment, Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will be at Wilson Memorial Service, Thursday, 6:00 - 7:30 PM.
Maxine was born in Halifax County, VA. and lived in Danville until her mother died when she was 9 years old after which she went to live at the Methodist Orphanage in Richmond, VA. She became the foster daughter of Everett and Beulah Bemont and foster sister to John Hatcher Bemont. When they moved to Wilson, she attended Charles L. Coon High School (Class of 1949) where she met Guy Offley Cox when he took her yearbook photograph. She attended Women's College (now UNC-Greensboro) receiving a secretarial degree. She and Guy were married August 18, 1951 and they were married for 63 years.
She was a loving wife and mother. She was a stay at home mother but worked part-time at Bissette's Drug Store Warehouse and Raines & Cox photographers until 1964 when she started her secretarial career. She worked at Tobacco Processors and was the school secretary at Ralph L. Fike Sr. High School for 26 years.
Maxine was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Bradshaw Class. She was a member of the Wilson Chapter of the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Club and achieved and maintained her KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) status for 35 years. Maxine was also a member of the Wilson Chorale and enjoyed performing and touring with the group.
Active in her children's lives, Maxine was a den mother with the Cub Scouts, a troop leader for the Girl Scouts, class mother, chauffeur for cheerleading squads and band booster. She will be remembered as an excellent cook and was especially known for her fabulous desserts. Her holiday meals were legendary and aiming to please everyone's sweet tooth, it was not unusual for her to serve more than 10 desserts at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
She is survived by her husband of 63 Years, Guy O. Cox; three children, Guy O. Cox Jr. (Joy) of Stafford, VA, Lynda C. Dixon (Tom) of Cary and Robert Cox of Sanford.; grandson, Andrew Tyler Cox of Fort Lauderdale, FL and foster brother, John H. Bemont of Cummings, GA; nieces and nephews, David Allen Cox of Boca Raton, FL, James Louis Cox of Charlotte, VT, Ann Batson James of Cary, Becky Batson Lawson of Mechanicsburg, PA,
E.T. (Ed) Batson, III, of Greensboro and Jane Batson Milar of Cary.
