WILSON - Marshall Long, 83, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
Funeral, Friday, 11 AM, First United Methodist Church, followed by a time of visiting.
Marshall was a native of Wilson County and graduated from Atlantic Christian College (Barton) and earned his Masters Degree in Education from East Carolina University. In the military, he qualified as a paratrooper. He was fortunate to play in the major league baseball farm system and was a pitcher for the Oklahoma City Indians in 1954.
With his interest in education, he was a school principal in Wake County and for 25 years was principal in Wilson County at New Hope Elementary, Forest Hills Middle and Charles L. Coon High School. He took a leave of absence from school administration at one point and was a representative for American Book Company.
Surviving is his wife, Rebecca Herring Clark Long; son, Marshall Long, Jr, of Dallas, TX; step-daughters, Becky Cannon (Mike) of Wilson, Sarah Jean Harrell (Danny) of Wilson, Lindy Newton (Billy) of Bath; step-son, Charlie Clark, Jr (Carolyn) of Margate, FL; nine step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; sister, Edna L. Boykin Johnston of Sanford and her sons, Ken and Marshall Boykin.

The family will be at home until the time of the funeral.
