Marilyn Adrian Smith, of Wilson, passed on June 6th, 2023 at age 92.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be on Saturday, June 24, 3:00 PM, at West Nash United Methodist Church followed by visitation.
She will be remembered by her loving family and friends for her quick wit, her outgoing personality and her never-ending support of all of our endeavors.
As our family moved about the country during Ray’s career, Marilyn immediately made friends in every new neighborhood she lived in. As a mom of four, she was an active supporter of the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and chauffeured the kids to all of the requisite band practices, sports events and part-time jobs as we grew up. She was a Soccer Mom long before the term was invented!
As an empty-nester, Marilyn and Ray frequently went to North Carolina to visit the kids, getting to know every twist and turn of US 29 in Virginia. Marilyn stayed in contact with friends around the country by phone and by mail throughout the years. Sending out Christmas cards was indeed a time-consuming process.
Marilyn retired to Florida, where she spent 23 years in The Villages – that is, when she wasn’t driving up and down I-95 to visit her children and grandchildren! She traveled so frequently that she got to know the staff at many of the hotels she stayed at. In return, the staff looked out for her, and made sure she always had a room on the first floor.
She moved to Wilson, North Carolina four years ago to be closer to family. We are grateful that we had the opportunity to see her more frequently – no more plane tickets needed to visit Mom!
Marilyn was preceded in death by husband Raymond Douglas Smith and son, R. Douglas “Doug” Smith, Jr.
She is survived by her children Cheryl S. Allgood (Dave), Ronald L. Smith (Ruth), Debra S. Ivey (Lindley); daughter-in-law, Pamela R. Smith, grandchildren, Lynn Allgood, Laura Allgood (Todd), Carey Ivey, Adrian Ivey, Robin Minette (Mike), Emily Clites (Dan), Ryan Smith (Brenna), Julie Smith, and Jeffrey Smith; great-grandchildren, Justin and Victoria Minette, Taylor Moss, and D.J. Clites; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Marilyn will be missed by all of us. We thank you for your kindness, your thoughts and prayers, and your gracious support in these recent days.
