Margie Powell

On February 9, 2024, Margie Ferrell Powell, 89, of Lucama left her earthly home to go to her heavenly home, surrounded by her children.

Funeral services will be held at Wilson Memorial Services on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM, followed by a burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont. The family will be at Springhill Presbyterian Church after 1:00 PM.

Margie was one of four children, born to Robert Bruce and Katie Mae Ferrell. She was born on October 3, 1934 in Lucama, North Carolina. She graduated from Lucama High School and married the love of her life, George Haywood Powell. Outside of the home, she enjoyed her time working at the polls and taking census. She was also very involved in church and taught Sunday School for many years. At home, she and Haywood ran their farm. They tended tobacco, corn, and beans, and in later years, raised cows. She raised three fine children, Haywood, Jr., Cathy, and Jeff. After retiring, she enjoyed reading, doing word searches, and gardening. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with those she cared about: friends and especially her family. She was an excellent cook and baker, and was happiest preparing a meal for a large group of loved ones. She regularly attended Springhill Presbyterian Church and Bible study. She enjoyed hand-writing personal notes that she included in cards for special events and holidays for family and friends. She was a blessing to so many.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, George Haywood Powell; her parents, Robert Bruce and Katie Mae Pennington Ferrell; brothers, Glenn and Ralph Ferrell, and sister, Joyce Ferrell.

She is survived by her brother, Fredrick Hugh Ferrell; her children, George Haywood Powell, Jr. (Jackie), Cathy Powell Procton, and Jeffrey Bruce Powell (Cathy); her grandchildren, Michael Aaron Procton (Carlie), Abigail Lea Procton, Erica Powell Mitchell (Chase), Taylor Bruce Powell (Josie); and four great-grandchildren, Landon Derrick Mitchell, Lydia Nicole Mitchell, Logan Bruce Mitchell, and Natalie Elizabeth Procton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Springhill Presbyterian Church (7335 Springhill School Rd., Lucama, NC 27851) or Hospice House of Williamsburg (4445 Powhatan Pkwy., Williamsburg, VA 23188.)
