Lucile Winstead

March 7, 1922 — March 2, 2016

ELM CITY - Lucile Wright Winstead, 93, of Elm City, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016 after years of struggle with multiple health issues, and complications from a recent hip surgery.

Funeral, Saturday, March 5, 11:00 am, Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson, followed by visitation at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2615 Tilghman Road, Wilson from 12 Noon to 1:00 pm.

Born to Eugene Otto Wright and Shreale Cameola Smith Wright of Tabor City. She studied at Wake Forest College and received a Batchelor of Science degree in Home Economics at East Carolina Teachers College. She taught six years at Williams Township near her parents home and pursued a graduate degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with additional studies at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. For 10 years she taught Home Economics at Elm City and was active in the Elm City Garden Club. She assisted with projects at the Wilson County Cooperative Extension Deptartment on food safety, etc. and multiple times was a judge for home made food/craft projects at the Wilson County and NC State Fairs. She retired from teaching to raising her children and helping her husband on the family farm.

A very faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many leadership positions. For 17 years, she held the position of Treasurer in the Thomas Hadley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Wilson. She also spent a great deal of time in service to family, friends and others in the community.

Lucile is preceded in death by her husband, Warren Q. Winstead, a Pacific WWII Navy Veteran and farmer; three older brothers, Willard C. Wright; Fulton O. Wright; and Morrison Wright of Tabor City.

She is survived by daughters Sherry W. Barts (Mike) of Raleigh and Tanga C. Winstead of New Orleans, LA; sisters-in-law, Ila Wright Morrison of North Myrtle Beach, SC; Estelle Wright Fulton of Loris, SC; Edna F. Winstead (Clinton) of Elm City; and 20 nieces and nephews.
