May 15, 1925 — July 28, 2015

WILSON - L. J. Moore, 90, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015.

Funeral, Friday, 7 PM, First Free Will Baptist Church, followed by visitation. Interment, Saturday, 11 AM, Maplewood Cemetery.

He was born on May 15, 1925 and grew up in an attended school in Wilson County. He was the son of the late Andrew Jackson and Bertha Bryant Moore of Wilson. On June 3, 1945, he married Carlie Walston and shared his life with her for 65 years. Together they had six children. LJ was a local tobacco farmer and was well known in the community for his success as a farmer and gardener. He lived on the homestead his father build in 1900 all his life and expanded the house as his family grew. He worked at Watson's Warehouse for many years and was a deacon at First Free Will Baptist Church. LJ was always helping others in the community with repairs to their homes or providing them with food from his garden. During his life time he worked very hard at many diverse professions. He was a carpenter; he helped establish and worked at Parker's BBQ; he ran a local country grocery store and he raised large crops of tobacco while maintaining a large vegetable garden with his family. He was also an avid golfer. After his retirement from farming, he concentrated on his vegetable garden and was known as the "collard man on 301 Highway" for the delicious collards that he grew and sold. He was an amazing gardener and handy man - he could fix anything. LJ was a legend in his time.

LJ was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carlie Walston Moore and their daughter, Margaret Ann Moore; parents, Andrew Jackson and Bertha Moore; sisters, Mamie Whitley and Margaret Pittman and brothers, John, Ben and Bob Moore.
