WILSON - Laura Maud Battle Winstead, 78, died August 11, 2006. She was born July 7, 1928, in Rocky Mount to Kemp Davis and Maud Bunn Battle and was preceded in death by her only sister, Elizabeth Battle Grossberg. Mrs. Winstead graduated from St. Margaret's School, Tappahannock, VA, and Randolph Macon Woman's College. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel, she received a master's degree and continued as a doctoral student at the Sorbonne, University of Paris, for two years. Her first teaching position was at Brennan College, Gainesville, GA. In Wilson, she taught at Atlantic Christian (Barton) College and Greenfield School. Active in her church, she taught Sunday School and was in the choir, Hispanic Ministry, St Francis Guild and the Community Soup Kitchen. She held membership in the National Society of the Colonial Dames of North America in the state of North Carolina and enjoyed her friends in The Book Club. She had a special concern for the work of the Mental Health Association and Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Funeral, Monday, 2:00 PM, St Timothy's Episcopal Church. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery, Section J. Surviving is her husband, Emerson C. "E.C." Winstead, Jr: sons, E. Kemp Winstead of Benson and Terry Winstead (Lynn) of Clayton: granddaughter, Michele Flowers (Chris) of Wilson: Terry's children, Tabita, T.J. and Deven: a nephew, Henry Grossberg of Manhattan, NY: an aunt, Mary Battle Shannon of Rocky Mount. The family will be at home, 3415 London Church Rd, Elm City. Memorials are suggested to St Timothy Episcopal Church, PO Box 1527, Wilson, NC 27894, or to a charity of one's choice. A special thanks to long term caregivers is extended to Joyce Merritt, Sheron Clay and Janie Williams as well as devotion with a caring concern to the St. Francis Guild.
