Kenneth Barnes

Kenneth E. Barnes, 78, died Thursday March 27,2025.

A native of Wilson County, he was the son of David Earl Barnes and Vetris B. Barnes. After graduating from Lucama High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a major in journalism and minor in American history,Ken spent his early working years teaching in Wilson County Schools. A highlight of his years in education was the eight years teaching journalism at Goldsboro High School where he worked with students to produce award-winning yearbooks, school newspapers, and the literary magazine. Friendships forged with students during this time have continued to this day. A student recently commented that Ken always stood for equality and justice for everyone and set an example they have always remembered.

Ken moved from Goldsboro to work in the NC Department of Cultural Resources during the first Hunt administration. He later accepted a communications position with IBM in the Research Triangle Park where a favorite part of his job was teaching a book design class at IBM sites throughout the United States and in Europe.

Known for his quick wit and generosity of spirit, Ken was a loyal friend, a passionate collector, and a lifetime supporter of the ideals of the Democratic party.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his sister June Carol Barnes Watkins and his brother-in-law Donnie Ray Watkins.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Collins Yelverton Barnes; nephew, William David Watkins and Katie Rowell.
