John Byrd

John Stewart Byrd, 90, of Wilson, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Funeral, Saturday, July 27, 12:00 PM, at First Baptist Church followed by visitation.

John was retired from Carolina Telephone and Telegraph(Sprint) and served on the Wilson City Council and numerous civic and professional organizations. He was a graduate of Campbell College and East Carolina University. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Wood Byrd; sons, David Louis Byrd and Edward Foster Byrd; and sister, Shirley Slaughter. 

John is survived by his son, John S. Byrd II and wife, Angela, of Clayton; grandchildren, Georgia Byrd and John S. Byrd III; sister, Patricia Barone, and a very warm and loving extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of the three scholarships' he established at Campbell University, the John Stewart and Joyce Wood Byrd Educational Scholarship, the Marion Stewart Byrd and Eunice Wood Divinity Scholarship and the Angela Stewart Byrd Nursing Scholarship, all c/o Campbell University, PO Box 116, Buies Creek, NC 27506, or First Baptist Church, PO Box 1467, Wilson, NC 27894 or to the charity one's choice.
