Betty Jean Powell Mercer, 85, of Lucama, died Wednesday, October 21, 2020.
Funeral, Sunday, 2:00 PM, Wilson Memorial Service, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Burial, Evergreen Memorial Park.
She courageously fought to live for months after suffering a cervical spinal injury from a fall in her beloved garden on July 3, 2020.
Mrs. Mercer was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Mr. William Roy Mercer, Sr. in 2012; son, William Roy Mercer, Jr. in 1979 and her grandson, Alex Abele in 2011.
She is survived by her remaining five children, Wanda Abele (Wolfgang) of Houston, TX, Anne Cockrell (Jack) of Danville, VA; George Mercer of Lucama, Darrin Mercer of Wendell and Ronald Mercer of Apex; her two grandchildren, Aaron Cockrell (Anne) and Jennifer Mercer (Darrin); sister, Gennette Tenney of Hamilton, GA.
Mrs. Mercer raised and sold produce and canned goods to the Wilson County community for more than thirty years at the Unity Free Will Baptist Church located on Downing Street. Jean really loved meeting folks every week and never met a stranger.

Mrs. Mercer so loved animals, especially her Timmy and Lady of the home.
