KINSTON - Jack Bardin Overman, Jr, 86, died July 1, 2013, at the N.C. Veterans Home in Kinston.
Funeral, Friday, July 5th, 11:00 AM, First Baptist Church. Visitation will precede the service from 10:00 - 10:45.
Surviving are his daughters, Jan Overman of Winston-Salem and Lou Ann Kernodle and her husband, Michael, of Boone; grandchildren, Jack K. Singley and his wife, Beth, of Durham and Leigh Ann Stephenson and husband, Matt, of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jean Gardner Overman, on September 2, 2012.
Jack was born August 4, 1925, in Greenville to Jack B. and Margaret Eagles Overman. He attended Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson and then served in the US Navy as a pharmacist mate aboard the USS Sperry during World War II.
Following the war, he graduated from Wake Forest University where he served as President of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, the Student Body and the Intra Fraternity Council.
Mr. Overman joined E.I. Dupont Company in 1952 and retired after 39 years with the firm. During those years he was active in the Jaycees and the Lions Club serving as President in 1983-84.
An Eagle Scout and lifetime supporter of the Boy Scouts, he served as an executive with the Coastal Carolina Chapter and later as a volunteer leader for Troop 63 at First Baptist Church. In his church, he served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher and President of the Reed Bible Class.
He will be remembered by family and friends as a quiet reflection of the spiritual values by which he chose to live his life. He was the epitome of a devoted follower of his Lord Jesus Christ and will be remembered for his love of family.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers who, with great compassion and love, cared for him over the past four years at home and more recently at the N.C. Veterans Home in Kinston.
