Hubert Walston

WILSON - Hubert Cozart Walston, 91, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

Funeral Thursday, 11 AM, First United Methodist Church. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery.

Hubert was born to Hyman and Ruth Walston on March 18, 1921 in Wilson, where he spent the majority of his life. He graduated from Darlington in Rome, Georgia. He attended University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and received a BA in History. He served in World War II as a Radio Operator on a B-26 in the 877th Bomb Squadron. He received the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and an Air Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1945.

Hubert had a successful career in the tobacco business all his working life and retired as a Vice President with Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, Richmond, Virginia.

He was an avid golfer and had a very successful amateur career. He loved the First United Methodist Church where he taught youth Sunday School for many years and was an active and dedicated member of the Bradshaw Sunday School class.

Hubert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Inza Bell Walston; sons, John Hearn Walston and wife, Janice and Erick Bell Walston all of Wilson, daughters, Inza Bell Walston and partner, Blair Both, of Wilmington and Tracy Walston Blair and husband, Larry, of Wilson; grandchildren, John Hearn, Mary-Katherine, Logan and Victor Walston; William Walston; Cameron and Hailey Blair. He is also survived by his oldest brother H.H. Walston, III and his wife, Martha, of Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son Hubert Cozart Walston, Jr.; brother, Stuart Walston; sisters, Sarah Walston Peters and Ruth Walston.

The family will be at the home of Hearn and Janice Walston, 2210 Sulgrave Dr., Wednesday 5 - 7 pm.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1423, Wilson, NC 27894 or the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund at WilMed Healthcare Foundation, 1705 Tarboro St SW, Wilson NC 27893.
