ELM CITY - Horace Thompson Barkley, 91, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006. Mr. Barkley, a World War II Army veteran, died at Veterans Hospital, Durham. He served in the European Theater having earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. Remembering those years, he held membership in the Cox-Putney American Legion Post #1, Elm City, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For 42 years, he was an employee of the former Imperial Tobacco Company in Wilson. Enjoyment to him was his family, friends, the outdoors, gardening and cooking. He was the oldest child of the late Wiley Z. and Erie Bulluck Barkley of the Town Creek community. He was preceded in death also by a son, Davy Thompson Barkley, and brothers, Edward, Milton, Robert, Henry and Willard Barkley. Funeral, Saturday, 11:00 AM, Wilson Memorial Service, 2811 Fieldstream Dr, N, Wilson, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Ronnie Davis, of Aenon Baptist Church. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Miriam Hyde Barkley; daughter, Pam Butler
