WILSON - George R. Barbour, 77, died Sunday, November 1, 2009. Funeral, Thursday, 3 PM, Evergreen Memorial Park. George was born on October 22, 1932, in Johnston County to the late Edward and Ida Coates Barbour. He married Wilma Stewart in 1953 and they lived most of their married life in Wilson County until her death in 2005. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosalie Hales of Johnston County. A U.S. Army veteran from the Korean Conflict, he worked for Frito Lay Company until 1979 when he opened the New Hope Convenient Store in Wilson. There he spent the next 30 years serving countless loyal customers and making lifelong friends. He loved his store, his friends - especially the New Hope community - playing cards, fishing, auto racing, the Washington Redskins football team and most of all, his family and his dog, Abby. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him. Surviving is his daughter, Beth Barbour Covolo of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Duncan Barnes, Cameron and Clark Covolo of Rocky Mount; sisters, Jean Scott, Margaret Johnson and Dorothy Hamilton; brother, Ravon Barbour. Memorials are suggested to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB #7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295. The family will be at Wilson Memorial Service, 2811 Fieldstream Dr, Wilson, on Wednesday, 6-8 PM.
