Elmer Barnes

GARNER - CMSgt Elmer Lee Barnes, U.S. Air Force, Retired, 74, died Sunday, November 24, 2013.

Funeral, Friday, 11 AM, Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Wilson, followed by visitation. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Barney is survived by his wife, Patricia Wilson Barnes; daughter, Barbara Godwin and husband, David, and their daughters, Brittany, Morgan and Eryn of Benson; son, Mark Barnes and wife, Susan, and their sons, Harrison, Jacob and Nathan of Vestal, NY; brother-in-law, Jim Wilson and wife, Mariam. of Eden.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Wilkins; stepfather, Jessie, and father, Elmo Barnes.

Barney and Pat, both originally from Wilson, were married for 52 years and travelled extensively with their family during his 30 years of service to our country in the US Air Force. After retirement from the military, Barney worked at Senter Tractor Co. in Garner until his health began deteriorating. Barney was an Elder at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church and a member of the last graduating class of Charles L. Coon High School in 1958.

During his military career he was awarded numerous medals, some of which include: Meritorious Service Medal, AF Expeditionary Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Legion of Merit Award.

He was always a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather and will be truly missed.
