WILSON - Edna Elizabeth Long Johnston, wife of the late Hugh B. Johnston, Jr., and a long-time resident and teacher in Wilson, died on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, in Sanford.
A memorial service will be held at Wilson Memorial Service, Saturday, July 18, at 10 AM. Interment will be for and at the convenience of the family at Maplewood Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnston, daughter of Albert Alvin Long and Mae Marie Ramsey, was born in Bristol, Florida, on May 11, 1921. She graduated from Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson, and then graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson at the age of 19. She earned a Master's degree from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) in 1952.
Mrs. Johnston taught school at Coon High School for a number of years before becoming an associate professor at Atlantic Christian where she taught freshman and sophomore English and English Literature for 37 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Hugh B. Johnston IV; a brother, Marshall Long; and her parents.
She is survived by her two sons, Colonel (Ret.) Kenneth S. Boykin (Gayle) of Elizabethtown and Marshall E. Boykin of Wilson; three grandchildren: Alexis K. Boykin of Raleigh, Stuart R. Boykin of Jacksonville, FL and Marshall E. Boykin II of Rocky Mount; two great grandchildren: Katie A. Boykin of Jacksonville, FL, and Addison R. Boykin of Rocky Mount.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 3184, Wilson, NC 27895-3184 or to the charity of one's choice.
