Herbert Edward (“Ed”) Ellis, Jr., 78, of Winterville, NC, formerly of Elm City, passed away at ECU Health Medical Center on Friday, April 26, 2024.
His funeral will be a graveside service at the mausoleum in Evergreen Memorial Park in Wilson, NC, on Tuesday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation with the family will follow the service.
On May 16, 1945, Ed was born the oldest son of Herbert Edward Ellis, Sr. and Frances Skinner Ellis. He was a 1963 graduate of Ralph L. Fike High School and later received his associate degree from Wilson Tech. He worked as an engineer for Rockwell Manufacturing and Corning Glass Works of Raleigh, NC, until becoming co-owner of Ellis Grading and Landscaping for 40 years. During this time, Ed also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years.
Ed had a great love of the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, boating, and scuba diving. However, his greatest love of all was that of his family. Ed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vivian Strickland Ellis, who was the love of his life. Together, they had one daughter, who was always his pride and joy, Dr. Leigh Ellis Howell (and husband, Dr. Travis Worth Howell) of Winston-Salem, NC. His three grandsons were definitely the apple of his eye … John Thomas Howell, David Worth Howell, and Andrew Ellis Howell. He is also survived by his brothers and their families … Mark Ellis (Kim) of Wilson and Charles Ellis (Gloria) of Morehead City … and was preceded in death by his parents.
Please feel free to bring a lawn chair to the service.
