ELM CITY - Durwood Matthews, 92, of the Penders Crossroads Community, died Thursday, August 11, 2016.
Funeral, Friday, 7:00 PM, Wilson Memorial Service, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Interment, Saturday, 10:00 AM, Evergreen Memorial Park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Cunningham Matthews and a son, Dennis "Tinker" Matthews.
Surviving is his daughter, Faye Gardner (Joe) of Stantonsburg; sons, Bill Gardner (Emily) of Stantonsburg, Gary Gardner (Wendy) of Wilson, Mickey Matthews (Claudia) and his family of Wilmington; grandchildren, Paige and Molly Gardner, Trinity and Bailey Gardner; sister, Emma Pennington of Wilson. He will be remembered as a wonderful father and family leader.
A combat veteran of World War II with three Bronze Service Stars, he served in Central Europe and Rhineland. He had been employed by the Donnelly Corporation and Long Manufacturing Company.
