WILSON - Thomas Lafayette Griffin, M.D., 77, died at home Saturday, August 28, 2010 with his wife and four children by his side. A service to celebrate his life will be Tuesday, 11 AM at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. Dr. Griffin was born to Walter Ewing and Selma Shadburn Griffin on February 22, 1933 in LaGrange, GA and grew up in Vienna, GA. He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded Order of the Arrow. He attended University of Georgia and graduated from The Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency in urology at Emory University/Grady Hospital. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and certified diplomate of the American Board of Urology and had served as chairman of the North Carolina Section; and on the board of directors of the Southeastern section. He came to Wilson in 1965 and practiced at Carolina Clinic for 25 years. He served with the Volunteers in Missions at First United Methodist Church for 15 years. His last mission trip was with Christ Church in Charlotte in a group that included his son and granddaughter. Dr. Griffin is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ann Sample Griffin; daughters, Laurie Hutchins and husband, Don, and Sinclair Lee and husband, Eric, all of Charlotte and Ann Thomas Johnston and husband, Murray, of Alexandria, VA; son, Scott Griffin and wife, Anita, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Candace Hutchins of Nashville, TN, Skip Hutchins of Oxford, MS, Anita Griffin of Columbia, SC, Ann Lyndon Griffin and Chip Griffin of Charlotte, Murray Johnston, IV and Griffin Johnston of Alexandria, VA; sisters, Betty Griffin Tanner of Birmingham, AL and Jane Griffin Simms of Atlanta, GA and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, PO Box 1527, Wilson NC 27894, to WilMed Hospice, 1705 Tarboro St, SW, Wilson NC 27893 or to the charity of one's choice. The family will receive visitors at the home, 1141 Woodland Drive.
