WILSON - Dr. G. Curtis Wilson, 84, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at his home.
Funeral, Saturday, 2:00 PM, First United Methodist Church. The family will be in the parlor, 1:00 - 1:45 PM. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitors may also call at the home on Friday, 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
Curtis was born in Chapanoke (Perquimans County) on his family's farm to the late James Christopher and Susie Mae Roberts Wilson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Ann Boole Wilson, a brother and four sisters.
After graduation from Perquimans County High School, Curtis attended Louisburg College for a year subsequently graduating from East Carolina College with a B.S. degree. He completed course work at the University of Tennessee while working for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. Upon return to North Carolina, he received his degree in dentistry from UNC-Chapel Hill, Class of 1955. Dr. Wilson served as a captain in the USAF Dental Corp for two years before settling in Wilson to establish his dental practice in 1957. He retired from practice 45 years later in 2002.
Upon arrival in Wilson, he became a member of First United Methodist and sang in the choir until his death - 56 years of service. He served on numerous boards and committees including the VIM mission team with service in Eastern North Carolina and as far away as Costa Rica.
Locally, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Wilson Jaycees, Wilson Dental Society and on to the North Carolina and National Dental Societies and the UNC Dental Alumni Association.
Curtis enjoyed golfing most Saturdays with friends at the Wilson Country Club, traveling, working in his yard and cheering for his beloved UNC-Tar Heels. He was a true Southern gentleman.
Surviving is his wife, Gail Rackley Wilson; son, George Curtis "Curt" Wilson, Jr, and his wife, Carol Goblet Wilson, of Raleigh, and their children, Anna Winifred Wilson of Raleigh, Emily Carol Wilson of New York, NY and Patrick Madison, Wilson of Raleigh; son, Christopher Laurence Wilson of Hastings, MN, his daughter, Chelsea Wilson Wise and husband, Stephon L. Wise of Albuquerque, NM, and their son, Malik Lamar Wise; a brother, James Crawford Wilson of Chapanoke; a sister-in-law, Anita Williams of Wilmington, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Choir Fund, PO Box 1423, Wilson, NC 27894.
