D.R. Barnes

Greenville - Doane Russell "Scoop" Barnes, 90, died Sunday, January 8, 2012.

Funeral, Friday, 11 AM at Wilson Memorial Service, 2811 Fieldstream Drive, Wilson, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson. The service will be conducted by long-time family friend, Eugene Newman.

A Wilson county native, Mr. Barnes was the son of the late Doane Russell Barnes and Vick Thomas Barnes. Upon graduation from Charles L. Coon High School, he worked on the construction of the U.S.S. Hornet in Newport News, Virginia. He entered the U.S. Army Airborne Division as a paratrooper in 1942 and participated in the Allied invasion of southern France, the Battle of the Bulge and occupation of Berlin. On September 6, 1947, he married Edna Massey. After the war, Mr. Barnes opened an ice cream soda shop named "The Scoop House". He also worked for the Retail Credit Company (now Equifax) until 1958. In 1958 they moved from Wilson to Morehead City to work with the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. The following year they started a family business, Barnes Awning & Window Company. They retired to Greenville in 2004. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his wife in 2007. Mr. Barnes was an old fashioned gentleman who always wore a hat and tie and loved talking about the Bible to anyone who would listen.

Surviving is his daughter, Vicki Hall (Mark) of Greenville, son, Joel Barnes of Atlantic Beach and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Kinston West Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2261 Hwy 11 North, Kinston, NC 28501.
