Donald Barnes

WILSON - Donald Bishop Barnes, 81, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Funeral, Friday, 11 AM, Maplewood Cemetery, Old Section. He was a son of the late Boisie Allen Barnes and Connie Bishop Barnes, born May 22, 1928, in Wilson. He completed Charles L. Coon High School and was graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University where he received his undergraduate degree. During the Korean conflict he served his country in the intelligence corps in Washington, DC and Turkey. Early in his career, he was associated in his family's cotton brokerage firm and later spent twenty years as an English professor at Nash Community College. He was preceded in death by a sister, Constance Barnes Strupe. He is survived by his brother, Boisie Allen Barnes, Jr. and wife, Tempie B. Barnes; cousin, Winnifred Petty Kelly and husband, H.F.; niece, Elizabeth Strupe; nephews, James Strupe and wife, Barbara, Phillip Strupe and wife, Vicky, and Boisie Allen Barnes, III; best friends, Linda and Robert Flippin and Leigh Flippin Krause.
