A huge supporter of Charles B. Aycock High School, he rarely missed a game be it football, basketball, or baseball.  He used his talent of welding to build athletic equipment for the weight room and other projects as needed.

Bruce was a member of Union Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church and served as treasurer of the Sunday School and as a deacon for many years.

In Pikeville, he served on the Town Board and was a member of the Jaycees.
