William D. “Bill” Phillips, 91, died Thursday, December 1, 2022.
Funeral, Sunday, 2:00 PM, First United Methodist Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing.
Bill was born on August 14,1931 in Chatham County, NC to George Paul Phillips and Minnie Hudson Phillips. He was raised on a beautiful farm up on a hill. His father died just as he was headed to college and he was needed to help his Mom look after things at the farm. Soon he met the love of his life, Martha Deane Bolton, and they began a family in Laurinburg. He spent most of his career managing the Chevrolet Oldsmobile dealership there. When not there, he enjoyed golfing with his friends, and spending time with his children and grandchildren at their Ocean Isle beach house. There were many happy hours there riding in Bubba's jeep, fishing and playing in the ocean! Other joys in his life included cheering on the Scotland High School Fighting Scots football team, and being a huge Carolina sports fan! Another love of his was his yard. He spent many joyful hours manicuring his lawn and landscaping it with beautiful flowers! Bubba also served his community in many ways. He was a lifelong member of Kiwanis Clubs and served as President for years.
Always first in his life was God; and he made sure to raise his family accordingly. He held many positions at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church including a lifelong Deacon. In 2014 he and Deane moved to Wilson. It was there they became Methodist. They both loved the church and were grateful to be so warmly embraced by the congregation and wonderful pastors.
"Bubba" touched many lives in his life and will be greatly missed.
Surviving is his wife, Deane Bolton Phillips; daughter, Becky Gibbons (Dr. Miller) of Wilson; son, William David Phillips, Jr. of Wilmington; grandchildren, Walton Gibbons, Jr. (Kelly) of Wilson, Kathryn Deane Putney (Witt) of Wilson, David Phillips Gibbons (Courtney) of Sarasota, FL, Will Phillips (Amanda) of Bolivia and Meg Phillips of Roanoke, VA; great-grandchildren, William Putney and Virginia Grace Putney, with an addition expected in December; sister, Eloise Dixon (Royce) of Rock Hill, SC.
Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1423, Wilson, NC 27894.
