WILSON - Burton Gloyden Stewart, Jr., 77, died Saturday, July 24, 2010. Funeral, Tuesday, 2 PM, First United Methodist Church, followed by a time of visiting. Interment will be for the family. Gloyden was born in Clayton to Burton G. and Evelyn Stallings Stewart. He graduated from Duke University in 1955 with an AB degree in Political Science. He went on to graduate from the School of Banking of the South, LSU, in 1970 and the Executive Program at the UNC School of Business in 1975. He began his business career as Regional Sales Manager of Allstate Insurance for North and South Carolina. The majority of his career was with BB&T where he retired after thirty-three years as a Senior Vice President. His last eight years were spent as Director of the Branch Corporation. During his career he served as a director and Chairman of the NC Payments Systems and Electronic Financial Services; a member and Director of the Bank Investor Relations Association; member of the National Investors Relations Institute and the American Management Association and was a member of the Governor's Efficiency Study Commission having served two terms on the NC Goals and Policy Board. In Wilson, he enjoyed being involved in the community with service on the Wilson Arts Council, United Way, Heart Association and the Wilson Rotary Club. His military service was two years of active duty in the Navy with transfer into the Naval Reserves with the rank of Lieutenant. Service and participation in his denomination were very important to him. In First United Methodist in Wilson, he served as a Trustee and was a member of the Endowment Fund, Stewardship Committee, Capital Campaign Committee, Finance Committee, Board of Stewards and the Staff/Parish Committee. Beyond Wilson, he served on the local committee of Cypress Glen Retirement Community, United Methodist Retirement Homes and Cypress Glen Trustees. For the United Methodist Retirement Homes Foundation, he served as chair of the finance and executive committees. Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Patricia Taylor Stewart; sons, Burton Gloyden Stewart, III (Emily Clement) and Herbert Taylor Stewart (Elizabeth Muldrew); grandchildren, Burton Gloyden IV "Bo", Mary Ivey Montgomery, Patricia Elizabeth, Emily Campbell, Harrison Taylor and Katherine Brooke, all of Raleigh; his brother, Wilber Clarence Stewart (Mary Elizabeth Britton) of Hightstown, NJ; a niece and nephew.
